Olympic officials tell restaurants to hold the dog
BEIJING (AP) -- Canine cuisine is being sent to the doghouse during next month's Beijing Olympic Games.  Dog meat has been struck from the menus of officially designated Olympic restaurants, and Beijing tourism officials are telling other outlets to discourage consumers from ordering dishes made from dogs, the official Xinhua News Agency reported today.  Waiters and waitresses should "patiently" suggest other options to diners who order dog, it said, quoting city tourism bureau Vice Director Xiong Yumei. Dog, known in Chinese as "xiangrou," or "fragrant meat," is eaten by some Chinese for its purported health-giving qualities.  Beijing isn't the first Olympic host to slap a ban on the dish. South Korea banned dog meat during the 1988 Seoul Olympics by invoking a law prohibiting the sale of "foods deemed unsightly." After the Olympics, the ban was not strictly enforced.  Dog meat is also eaten in some other Asian countries, including Vietnam, the Philippines and Laos.

Your puppy's "mouthing" off
When mouthing, those sharp puppy milk teeth can leave quite an impression. But without fingers, puppies explore the world with their mouths.

On or off the furniture?
If you don't want your puppy on the couch, or other furniture, it's best to train him to stay off while he's still a puppy before he gets too comfortable.

Medicating your puppy
Knowing how to give your puppy medication is necessary to his health and happiness. Never medicate without a vet's prescription.

LATE LICENSING FEES WAIVED THIS SUN. IN LONG BEACH
One of the best ways to keep your pet safe and healthy is to license and microchip your dog.  More than 12,500 animals pass through the Long Beach Animal Shelter each year, many of them returned quickly to their owners because they have up-to-date licenses and microchip technology.  For one day only - Sun., July 20 - the City of Long Beach will waive late fees for licensing at the spcaL.A. Vaccination & Microchip Clinic.  This special event will take place from 10 am to 2 p.m. at the P.D. Pitchford Companion Animal Village, 7700 E. Spring St. No appointment is necessary.

Is there any chance that he might bite my child?"

If you're not concerned, you really should be. I don't mean to scare you, but the truth is, approximately 80% of dog bites happen to children under five, and 80% of those are in the face. And, most alarmingly, most dog bites happen by the family dog.  Check out this dog training book and audio series for parents who are expecting a new baby.

The Cost of a Dog
The costs of a new puppy vary significantly. A mixed breed from a local animal shelter will be a lot cheaper than a pure breed, and the quality of the pure breed will push the purchase price even higher.  "Show quality" puppies with impressive pedigrees and desired conformation characteristics will be much more expensive than those designated as "pet quality." In addition, the type of purebred dog will directly affect the costs. Common breeds, such as cocker spaniels, schnauzers and beagles will cost less than the same quality of rare breeds.

Small to medium-sized dogs

- Estimated life span: 14 years

- First year: $740 to $1,325

- Estimated annual costs thereafter: $500 to $875
Total cost over a dog's lifetime is about $7,240 to $12,700.

Pet Orphans begins dog DNA testing
Now dog DNA testing has been around for awhile (actually since 2007 according to this wikipedia article) but Pet Orphans has just recently began doing dog DNA testing on a few of our harder to place dogs, because, according to them, the test is beneficial to both the dog and the adopter. The Wisdom Panel MX Mixed Breed Analysis can identify 134 of the approx 150 AKC registered breeds, and with 90% accuracy give a dog's heritage going back 3 generations. A blood sample is taken from the animal and sent off to a lab. Approximately 3 weeks later the results come back.
